Side Effects: Want to Look Younger? Get Up and Move!

Want to Look Younger? Get Up and Move! Instead of spending your time and money researching the latest anti-aging moisturizer, dermal filler, or surgical procedure, it appears that you can restore youthfulness to your skin through exercise!

In an interesting set of studies from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada it was observed in the second study that adding 30 minutes of endurance training at a minimum of 65% of their maximum aerobic capacity twice a week for 3 months to a group of sedentary 65-year-old’s routine resulted in a significantly more youthful skin appearance.

As we age, the outer layer of skin becomes more dense, drier, and flakier and the underlying layer gets thinner and loses elasticity so that the skin becomes more translucent and begins to sag. This usually begins to happen around the age of 40. These changes could be observed in the skin biopsied from the sedentary 65 year olds. After the three months of exercise, a new biopsy showed skin characteristics similar to those observed in the 20 – 40 year old group included in the first study.

This is good. Why is this good? Unlike specialized eye cream, exercise won’t just help your skin. It will strengthen your heart, increase your flexibility, develop your muscles, improve your mood, aid in digestion, and possibly lower your blood pressure.

Find it hard to get started? I know. I can’t even remember how much I’ve spent through the years on fitness memberships I used once or twice. After that, every time work challenged my fitness schedule, I let work win. That didn’t mean I sat on the couch. I water skied, canoed, snow skied, and hiked. What I learned from this was that I have to really enjoy an activity or I won’t do it. My fitness plan can’t seem like “working out”. It has to feel like fun.

If you’re like me and you having trouble sticking with a workout plan, then try an experiment for one month. During that month, explore 4 or 5 different kinds of activity. Do each one a couple of times until you hit on the thing that you like so much it doesn’t seem like work. That will be the key to sticking with a program. When you love the activity and how it makes you feel, you won’t have to force yourself to participate regularly. You may even find yourself looking forward to it. That’s how I feel about swimming!
yoga
Of course there are many more possibilities than 4 or 5. There’s walking, running, cycling, climbing, weight lifting, CrossFit, Zumba, Pilates, barre workout, Jazzercise, ballroom dancing, pole dancing, belly dancing, trapeze workouts, yoga, swimming, rowing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, kickball, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, softball, gardening, bleacher walks, surfing, water skiing, snow skiing, snow boarding, trampoline workouts, rope jumping, and even walking the dog.

If you love variety, you can simply repeat the experiment over and over and you’ll have a widely varied fitness plan. If you feel more comfortable with a simpler rotation, you’ll have to narrow the list to the top few things you enjoy. One good way to begin paring down is to think back and remember what you loved to do as a child. If there’s a related activity, or an activity that puts you in a similar environment, that is age and health appropriate – choose that one.

Get up, get moving, and you’ll automatically be healthier and have younger looking skin. There’s some side effects I can get behind!

Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning a new fitness program.

Get Your Ducks in a Row with this Gluten-Free Pasta!

ducks in a row

Even your kids will want to get their ducks in a row with this duck-shaped gluten-free pasta. The raw ducks make for an enjoyable math lesson prior to cooking and an art lesson while your child eats. Made from nothing but corn flour and water, these adorable ducks can be used in soup, with a sauce, or to stretch a one-pot meal.

As often happens, I found this pasta while shopping for something else in a store I don’t usually frequent. The bright green bag full of Sam Mills Pasta for Kids boasts that these ducks are free from Gluten, GMOs, Dairy, Cholesterol, Egg, Sugar, Yeast, Soy, Sodium, and Nuts. They’re even Kosher. And they’re made in Romania for a bit of foreign flair to boot.

One serving contains 194 calories, .5 grams of fat, 44.2 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of dietary fiber, and 3.1 grams of protein. That seems like a large carb count, but the bag also promises a low glycemic index of less than 40. There are 6 servings per 12 oz. bag

After a mere 8 minutes in boiling water, the ducks are tender and ready to swim in a meat sauce or chicken soup. As long as it’s not overcooked, the pasta retains its shape nicely. Like other corn pastas, both the flavor and texture are benign. Your kids will be happy to eat it and to share with their gluten-eating buddies.

I don’t often eat pasta, but I like to have some in the house for those moments when I need a quick filler. This particular item offers a high fun factor and little to object to so it is more than adequate to fill that role.

Sam Mills offers a wide range of gluten-free products including an alphabet pasta with the same positive attributes. Once our ducks are in a row, let’s get the kids in the kitchen for some pasta and word play!

When It’s Done, It’s Done

In the past couple of days I’ve had two reminders of how important it is to recognize that when it’s done, it’s done. This week is Ben’s birthday. He may be 30ish years old, but he loves to still play like a kid.

Okay, I must confess, I love to play like a kid too. Put our heads together and you never know what sort of plan we’ll cook up. This year, we decided to plan a combined birthday party…at a trampoline park.

trampolines

Ben invited his friends. I carefully selected from my friends those who seemed to think jumping around for a couple of hours sounded fun. We booked a birthday party for 10.

Since we were planning to play like children, I decided to make kid snacks that included cupcakes baked in ice cream cones.

I had no trouble finding gluten-free ice cream cones. I even have a metal rack that holds the cones in place so they don’t spill while they’re baking– easy peasy. The cake batter was quick and easy to throw together even though I was out of brown rice flour. I just substituted white rice flour, filled the cones, popped them in the oven, and set the timer.

After 15 minutes, I decided the cakes needed a couple more minutes. At 17 minutes, I inserted a toothpick and it came out clean. I know that means the cakes are done, but they weren’t even beginning to brown so I decided to leave them 2 or 3 more minutes. Why? I guess it just felt weird for the tops to look so white. I dunno.

Ice Cream Cones

What I do know is that while they tasted good, the overcooking made the cupcakes dry. So arrived my first reminder that when things are done they’re done. Go with it. If you don’t there will be undesirable consequences.

Ben is still learning this lesson. He jumped, flipped, played dodge ball, bounced and had a blast for three solid hours. After two hours, he suffered an ill landed 2.5 revolution flip into the foam pit. Was he done? Perhaps he should have been.

The party was Sunday. On Monday, Ben could hardly move. He hurt everywhere except his calves. Yesterday, he shifted his weight onto his left leg to step into his car. It gave way and he fell prone on the driveway. He said everything that didn’t hurt on Monday was hurting.

What have I concluded from the past few days? Pay attention! Trust the information you’re receiving. Stop second-guessing everything. When you see evidence that something is done, for goodness sake, let it be done!
